Bringing children to see the wild Japanese macaques requires knowing the trail conditions and park rules. Because the path is rugged and the monkeys are wild, families need to pack correctly. Brief your kids on safety before arriving.

Can you bring a stroller to the Snow Monkey Park?

No, you cannot use a stroller on the trail to the park.

The approach to the park requires walking a 1.6-kilometer forest trail. This path features unpaved dirt roads and stairs. It is completely inaccessible for strollers and wheelchairs. Families with infants or toddlers must use a baby carrier.

You should leave heavy luggage in lockers at the station. You can also use lockers at the Snow Monkey Resorts Info & Gift Shop near the trailhead.

How long is the hike for kids?

The walk takes about 25 to 35 minutes each way.

Kids will need to walk 1.6 kilometers from the Kanbayashi Onsen bus stop to the park entrance. The trail is mostly flat but takes longer in winter when the ground is icy. There are limited vending machines past the entrance, so bring bottled water for the walk.

What rules do children need to follow?

Children must keep a respectful distance and never touch the monkeys.

The macaques are wild animals. You must teach kids not to feed them or show them any food. Tell children not to stare into the monkeys' eyes, as the animals interpret this as hostile.

If curious baby monkeys approach your kids, you must step away immediately. Flash photography is allowed, but keep cameras and smartphones away from the monkeys.

What should families wear in winter?

Winter visits require heavy tread snow boots and warm layers.

Between December and March, the trail becomes very slippery and muddy. Kids need waterproof winter coats, thermal base layers, gloves, and thick socks. Slip-on ice crampons are highly recommended for safety.

You can rent snow boots or buy crampons at the Snow Monkey Resorts Info & Gift Shop before starting the hike.

When is the best time for kids to see baby monkeys?

Late April to early June marks the birthing season.

If you visit during the spring, your family has the highest chance of spotting newborn macaques. The babies cling to their mothers in the river valley observation areas. The trail is also much easier to walk during these warmer months.

No. The hot spring pool at the park is exclusively for the monkeys. Human bathing is strictly prohibited under any circumstances.
