Reaching Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park requires a 25-minute to 35-minute walk through the forest. Because the park sits at an altitude of 850 meters, the unpaved path turns icy and slippery between December and March. Preparing the right winter gear prevents falls and keeps you warm while watching the macaques.

What kind of shoes do I need for the Snow Monkey Park trail?

You need waterproof snow boots with heavy tread for the winter months.

The 1.6-kilometer path is unpaved and features stairs. In winter, packed snow turns to ice, and warmer days create deep mud. Wear thick socks and sturdy boots. If you visit outside of winter, standard hiking boots or sturdy walking shoes work fine.

Do I need ice crampons for the trail?

Slip-on ice crampons are highly recommended from December to March.

The path becomes very slippery during peak winter season. Crampons give you the grip needed to walk safely. If you do not own them, you can rent snow boots or buy crampons at the Snow Monkey Resorts Info & Gift Shop at the trailhead.

What should I wear to Snow Monkey Park in winter?

Dress in thermal base layers and a warm, waterproof winter coat.

You will be standing outside in freezing temperatures while watching the monkeys. Add a warm winter hat and gloves to retain body heat. The park does not have indoor heating areas near the monkey pool.

Can I bring luggage on the trail?

No, you should only bring a small daypack on the 1.6-kilometer walk.

The unpaved path and stairs make rolling suitcases impossible to use. Leave heavy luggage in coin lockers at the train station or at the info center at the trailhead. Carry small bills in Japanese Yen in your daypack for lockers and buses.

What camera gear is best for the snow monkeys?

Bring a camera with a zoom lens to photograph the monkeys from a safe distance.

You must keep a respectful distance from the macaques at all times. Flash photography is permitted, but you cannot put your camera or smartphone close to the animals. A zoom lens allows you to capture clear shots without breaking park rules.

What else should I pack for the monkey park?

Bring cash in Japanese Yen and bottled water for the hike.

There are limited vending machines past the park entrance. Carry your own water for the 35-minute walk. You also need cash to pay for local buses, coin lockers, and small purchases.
